The Basic Microphones - The Shure SM57 & the Neumann U87

By Caron Delcambre

Without having a drum kit in your home recording studio and you generally only record yourself then you can likely get away with having only one condenser microphone and one dynamic mic in your facilities. If you actually want to get great results then you'll want to choose the Shure SM57 as the dynamic mic and the Neumann U87 as your condenser microphone. These are the two absolute standards in their respective areas.

First you need to understand which microphone you use for what.

For instance for recording vocals you will want to use the Neumann U87 condenser microphone, in fact it should be the best recognized vocal mic in the world. Main music galleries all over the place have Neumann U87s ready to go to record superior vocals. Company there's a huge difference between recording with a cheap mic and a high quality (but not so cheap) microphone such as the U87.

You will be able to record all of your acoustic devices with the U87 along with your vocals. You may get slightly better results using a small diapraghm condenser as opposed to the large diapraghm (like the U87) when it comes to recording acoustic guitars but I think you'll be satisfied with your results.

You will need to use the Shure SM57 dynamic microphone to record your electrical guitar's amp. Why not just go immediate into your audio interface? Since it sounds a lot, much, much better when you report your amplifier with the SM57. If you're currently going direct in and also you don't understand why you aren't getting the sound you would like, I think you'll be blown away at the difference.

Now for what's promising and some not so great. The good news is that the Shure SM57 is very affordable. It can be discovered for about $100. The actual not so good news would be that the Neumann U87 retails for more than $4000. But you might be able to find it on the internet for a less expensive price (especially if you get one used and since they are such high quality durable mics you will likely end up being very pleased with the used microphone you buy.)
