I finally switched over to a digital USB mixer and many of my friends ended up being very disappointed in me. Not surprisingly, they are all garage hard rock snobs. They believe in utilizing a low fidelity, analog audio mixer and cassette tape recording gear as far as possible. In my opinion, it just seems to be silly. Owning a high quality audio mixer, a digital audio recorder, and the most recent studio apparatus is a thing that any music artist wishes.
Do you you want to have a rugged and pure sound? It can be done on digital devices just as conveniently as with analog gear. It isn't like you must make everything sound manufactured should you not want to. Even so, having good audio mixers and receivers allows you to do just that if you want to. It is all about owning the most creative alternatives possible.
Nonetheless, I was pretty used to using my analog audio mixer gear. It took a fair bit of money and time to set up a new audio recording studio. I have been using the same 8-track recorder for so many years after all, that I have learned to adapt to all of its quirks. The same goes for the audio mixer.
A digital USB mixer is entirely another thing. It is difficult to get accustomed to something so clean and precise. However, after I did get comfortable with it, I was definitely grateful for it. I have more control with the music than in the past. Everything would be at exactly the sound level I desired. It was a big shift for me, and one that I have pretty much coped with.
Of course, the audio USB mixer is only one part of getting a good pro audio setup. The real linchpin of it is getting the computer audio recording software set up and working right. Effects that used to require a particular recording round to set up, thousands of dollars of equipment, and specialized mics can now be simulated with a great degree of accuracy in most audio recording software. All in all, it is worth the effort to catch up with the new technology.
