Serial ATA Connector And Its Advantages

SATA stands for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. The serial ATA connector is a cable for connecting the bus adapters on a computer motherboard or any other host to secondary storage devices. Examples of mass storage devices are optical drives and hard disks drives.

The SATA interface was developed as a replacement for the parallel ATA which is abbreviated as PATA but is commonly known as IDE cable standing for Integrated Drive Electronics. The SATA came into being in the year 2003.

The interface cable came with numerous advantages over its predecessor. It was much smaller in size and this translates to reduced costs of manufacturing. The cable is made up of seven conductors unlike its predecessor which was made up of 40 conductors.

It also has a faster rate of data transfer and signaling rate as well as the property of native hot swapping. Its faster data transfer rate and efficiency is attributed to the I/O queuing protocol which it employs. Two conductors on the interface are dedicated to communication from the host device. On the other hand the IDE cable used a16-bit data bus which meant it had to have additional support and many control signals and operated at a lower frequency.

The basic ATAPI and ATA set of commands was used with SATA to ensure backward compatibility with software and applications of the same legacy. As a result of its advantages SATA enjoys more than 99% of the market share for desktops as it has phased out the IDE connector in laptops and desktops. However, IDE is still preferred in embedded and industrial applications like the compact flash storage.

Specifications and compatibility issues are handled by the SATA International Organization. The organization ratifies, creates and publishes the specifications about its interoperability. It also publishes plug fests and test cases. Content ownership of the serial ata connector has been transferred to other industry bodies just as is the case with other industry compatibility standards.
